What began as an invitation to a professional exchange with 16 bread sommeliers evolved into a unique experience for all involved: the MIWE expo, which took place on 22 and 23 September at the MIWE live baking center in Arnstein, became a celebration of artisan baking culture - and a place of genuine connection.
Bread sommeliers from all over Germany accepted the invitation and showcased their regional specialities at the open baking station - including a mixed rye loaf with scalded flour, a wholegrain spelt bread with seeds, a long-fermented wheat sourdough and many other artisan recipes and regional highlights. The baking was accompanied by expert commentary and lively discussions with around 150 visitors each day.
In a series of short, focused talks, the bread experts shared their ingredient philosophies, baking concepts and personal takes on current industry trends. The result was a dialogue that went far beyond technical discussion - collegial, inspiring and marked by mutual respect.
Rather than working side by side, participants innovated, baked and exchanged ideas together. The sommeliers shared insights with one another, visitors asked questions, and everyone came together to taste, reflect and laugh. Many left not only with fresh inspiration, but also with the feeling of being part of a vibrant community.
The MIWE expo provided the perfect setting for this special gathering. Technology and processes were present, but intentionally stepped into the background. At the heart of it all were the people, their stories and a shared passion for great bread.
This event proved that bakers are more than skilled professionals - they’re innovators, expert networkers and ambassadors of a unique culture that brings people together.
